Union-Made Uniforms
The Amalgamated Transit Union has teamed up with UNITE to make sure that every bus and metro driver is able to wear a union-made uniform.
ATU members whose employer purchases their uniforms can demand that the employer buy from union suppliers.
ATU members who receive allowances or vouchers to buy their uniforms can find out which of their authorized uniform stores are Union Products Dealers (stores that have decided to sell only union-made transit uniforms), and then shop only at those stores.
Greyhound
Thanks to the efforts of ATU National Local 1700, Greyhound bus drivers will now be driving in style, wearing union-made uniforms. Local 1700 demanded that Greyhound switch to a union supplier for their trademark gray uniforms. As a result, the company recently awarded its uniform program to a vendor that will provide all union-made uniforms.
Dallas Transit
ATU Local 1338, representing Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus drivers, has made it clear that they will only support uniform vendors that sell union-made transit uniforms. Local 1338 joined UNITE to protest one of the two local uniform stores where DART employees can shop, because that store sells non-union DART uniforms. And Local 1338 members have been going in droves to the other local uniform store, because that store has decided to sell only union-made transit uniforms.
These victories by ATU locals are driving more work into union uniform factories and saving the jobs of union garment workers.
