Danny Glover Joins Prudential Workers to Launch 12-Day Candlelight Vigil
December 17, 2007
On December 4th, striking workers from Prudential Overall Supply were joined by actor and activist Danny Glover to begin a 12-day candlelight vigil outside of the company’s headquarters in Irvine, California. Workers, union and non-union, from five facilities across the state have been on an unfair labor practices strike since September 12th. They are fighting to improve wages, healthcare, and working conditions. Prudential, California's largest regional uniform and cleanroom laundry company, has responded with threats, coercion and intimidation.
In July, Prudential laundry workers and UNITE HERE filed a complaint alleging violations of wage, benefit, holidays and paid time off standards under the federal Service Contract Act at seven Prudential facilities in California and Arizona. The Department of Labor is currently investigating.
Prudential workers have filed complaints alleging violations of local Living Wage ordinances in San Diego, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Ventura County. San Diego responded by terminating its contract with Prudential and suing the company for up to $1.82 million for engaging in “unlawful, unfair and fraudulent business practices” in underpaying workers. Oakland found Prudential in violation of their Living Wage ordinance and ordered the company to pay more than $120,000 in back wages. After Ventura County officials made it clear to Prudential that the company would be required to adhere to the Living Wage ordinance, the company decided to abandon the county contract. Enforcement officials in Los Angeles are investigating workers’ complaints there.
