There are many questions being raised by UNITE HERE Sky Chefs members about changes to be put into effect following the recent vote. In addition, there are many questions about the bonuses. Here are answers to the most commonly asked questions so far. If you have additional questions, be sure to ask your Union Representative about them.

At Sky Chefs, we have a lot of questions about the new contract:

  • The 11% bonus will be on the paycheck dated May 11th.
  • The formula for determining the bonus is to take your hourly base pay rate, multiply that times 2080 (hours worked in a year), and multiply that amount times 11%. For example, if you earned $11.50 per hour, your bonus would be $2,631.20.
    • EXAMPLE
$ 11.50 (hourly base rate of pay)
      x 2080 (40 hours per week X 52 weeks per year)
      $23,920.00 (annual pay)
      x .11 (the 11% bonus rate)
$ 2,631.20 amount of the bonus if you earn $11.50/hr
  • The bonus is a separate payroll code. It will say BONUS on your pay stub. The bonus will be taxed at your normal rate, as if it were wages. According to SkyChefs: “in almost every case that will be a lower tax rate than the flat tax rate if we categorized it as a "bonus" (supplemental wages).
  • The bonuses will be included with your regular weekly payroll.
  • The first portion of the bonus ($250 or $500, depending on how your kitchen voted) will be paid on the April 27th pay card. In California, Michigan and Nevada, where pay cards aren’t used, the normal delivery method will be used (check, direct deposit, etc).
  • The wage reduction is effective April 28, and will appear on the May 4 paycheck for all hours paid from April 28 forward.
  • Changes in the medical plans will be effective July 1, 2006.
  • The 32 hour per week requirement for benefit eligibility is effective April 24.
  • Holiday changes are effective May 1st.
  • Child/Dependent care subsidy ends effective May 1st. You will have until August 1st to turn in your receipts.
  • The Healthy Lifestyle Price Tag Credits (Tobacco-Free Household & Health Risk Appraisal) will also end as of the May 4 paycheck.
